Cobain or King?
Xispas Viewpoint:
Cobain or King?

By Oscar Barajas

Sometimes the world has this way of depressing me beyond words. Last week there were countless tributes to Kurt Cobain and I was hard pressed to find any for the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Don’t get me wrong. Kurt Cobain will always be one of the most talented voices of what I consider my generation, but he will never compare with Martin Luther King.

I mean Mr. Cobain’s music might have influenced my life, but it did not change it. The only place where I was able to get my MLK fix was on some independent radio station which ran a couple of his speeches. The good thing was that they kind of omitted the famous I HAVE A DREAM speech. You remember that speech, don’t you? It’s the very same speech that in 1996, Republicans used as a ploy to scapegoat affirmative action as a racist institution before moving forward and crucifying it.
Who would have thought California Governor Pete Wilson would show us the light by showing us that there is nothing more racist than ignoring the content of someone’s character. And let’s face it, Republicans always have our best interest and are therefore the best judges of character. They call themselves the original party of abolitionists. After all they are part of Abraham Lincoln’s political party, the REPUBLICAN PARTY!

So is it more shocking or surprising that their last bright war tactical effort was the Civil War? I’m not counting either of the Persian Gulf Wars because that was just an exercise in capitalistic gangbanging. Modern day Republicans stand on a platform of morality because they have little else to stand on. They have spearheaded an effort that has plunged this nation into an ever increasing unpopular war. I listen to a lot of talk radio as these callers call up and insist that the United States needs to finish off its enemies, and the best way to do that is by finishing this war. I have to ponder if we are finishing the war or if the war is finishing us.
