LILA DOWNS grew up in Oaxaca, Mexico, and in Minnesota, USA. The daughter of a Scottish American father and Mixtec Indian mother, Downs'life and artistry reflects her mixed parentage and bi-nationalism. Downs jams with Brazilian, Cuban, Chilean, Mexican, and American musicians... the music is rootsy, underlined by Latin Jazz, with a penchant for politically progressive lyrics couched in magical realism poetry.
