DEATH TAKES FRIDA
Sergio Hernandez 2002
Acrylic on Canvas, 24 X 36

Sergio Hernandez started making public art as a student when he worked as a cartoonist for Con Safos magazine in the early 1970's. He also helped paint what is credited as being the very first Chicano mural... a collective work that appeared on the UCLA campus in 1970. Currently Sergio is the lead cartoonist for Xispas, but he also continues to pursue fine art painting and printmaking.

In 2003 the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum of Chicago Illinois included his "Death Takes Frida" painting in their "Dia de los Muertos: Reflections of the Soul" exhibit. Here's what Sergio has to say about his painting. "This work was originally inspired by a photograph of Diego Rivera kissing his wife on her death bed. I portrayed Frida welcoming death, surrounded by Posada-esque handmaidens. In the tradition of Frida's own surrealist style, this painting captures the beginning of her journey to the next world."
